Reading a Canine Color Genetics Report

What each part of a color DNA report can tell you, and which conclusions still require breed context.

A laboratory report is a set of genotype observations, not a complete prediction by itself. Start by checking which variants were tested and whether the panel covers the loci relevant to the breed.

Translate each result into the allele notation used by the laboratory before combining it with a mate's results. This keeps carrier status distinct from the color that is visible today.

Finally, compare the report with the breed-specific guide and welfare notes. Genetics can clarify probabilities, but it cannot replace health screening or responsible breeding decisions.
